Music

The Department of Education introduced Model Music Curriculum (MMC) in March 2021. Since this was introduced, we have worked hard to ensure that our children are taught a wide and varied genre of music.

Charanga is a scheme that we have adopted to use throughout our school. Each week the teachers and children, from Nursery to year 6 are accessing the scheme and not only learn different genres of music to sing, but how to recognise a pulse, the rhythm, and the tempo of a song.

Tutors and Lessons

We are dedicated to implementing a wide curriculum at Benchill and each year group has an amazing opportunity to learn with a professional music tutor.

  • KS1 and Lower KS2: percussion lessons taught by Liz with over 20 years of experience
  • Year 5: Guitar lessons taught by Luke
  • Year 6: Opera Taught by Phillip an opera singer from Primary Robin.

Assessment

Ofsted requires music to be assessed musically. We intend to do this by taking a video clip at the beginning of each term and then one at the half term. This will demonstrate the progression each child has achieved.

Assembly

Each Monday, KS1, and Reception will be invited to a weekly assembly to learn traditional songs, such as Morning Has Broken, Kumbaya my Lord, All Things Bright and Beautiful, etc.

Choir

KS2 will be invited to join a choir after school on a Monday. The choir will be linked with Young Voices, a concert held at the AO Arena in Manchester on Tuesday 31st January 2023. The choir will also be expected to perform in the local community and at special events at school, so commitment is vital.

Benchill Primary World Music Day

World Music Day on the 15th June 2023 is a chance for each child to dress up as their favourite rock/pop star. All lessons are taught through music for example writing their own lyrics to a song and maths songs. Travelling by Tuba and Liz perform throughout the day to all the year groups.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Throughout the year Charanga offers CPD courses for staff to ensure we are giving the children an exciting experience during their music lessons.

Music Squad

We're very excited to continue offering keyboard lessons with Music Squad this year. Music Squad has been making waves in primary schools throughout Manchester and is all about making learning an instrument as FUN, as SILLY, and as JOYFUL as it should be! At Benchill, Music Squad offers the opportunity to learn the keyboard in a relaxed, group setting on a Tuesday and Wednesday after school. Several of our pupils are looking forward to continuing their musical journey from last year and there are now some extra places available in the Squad to join them! If you want to give your child a life-long passion, get in touch with Hannah today at 07379 325251 or hannah@musicsquad.co.uk. Or for more information on the well-being and confidence-boosting benefits of learning an instrument, head to www.musicsquad.co.uk/parents.

We are also pleased to announce that in July 2023, we have become a silver partner Music Squad school! This is in recognition of realising the vision of the National Plan for Music Education in terms of co-curricular provision for instrumental and vocal lessons.
