Benchill's Governors

This page will tell you who our Governors are and a bit about them!

John McKie, Chair of Governors

I am very proud and honoured to be re-elected as  the Chair of Governors of your school. I retired in January 2014 after spending all my working life in primary education, the last 18 years as Headteacher of Baguley Hall Primary School.

Having worked closely with Benchill Primary School in recent years,  I know that the school is currently led by an excellent Headteacher. I look forward to continuing to work alongside  Mrs Eken and her dedicated staff, in partnership with yourselves, to continue to provide your children with the best education possible. An education that is recognised as good by the Ofsted inspectors.

It has always been my belief that every child is entitled to receive an outstanding quality of education, delivered through a rich, broad and balanced curriculum which is matched to the individual need of every pupil.

Working together I hope we can help to develop the full academic and social potential of your children, to educate them with the skills and values that will enable them to  become responsible and caring adults in their future lives.

Ian Madley, Vice-Chair Resources

I am a community governor having previously been Deputy Chair of Governors at a school in Stockport.  My interest in education covers the whole age range from early-years up to my day job at Keele University.  My contribution as a Governor will be to bring the both my business experience and the perspective of being a Governor at a different school.  Like most people of my generation I can name the teachers who inspired me as a pupil and hope, in my small way, to contribute to future generations by supporting the Head and teaching staff to deliver the excellent education that Benchill provides.

I live in Stockport and am married with two grown up daughters, one of whom will start to train as a primary school teacher this year.

Julia Pugh, LA Governor

I am the Local Authority Governor and have served on the governing body for a year and a half.  I have recently been appointed as the Vice Chair of the Governing body, I also sit on the Resources committee. I am also the link governor for literacy.

I am 31 and married. I have lived locally for 10 years. I am a Macmillan Clinical Nurse specialist working at the Christie hospital in Manchester. I enjoy running, cycling and baking in equal measure. The reason I became a governor was I wanted to do something to help out our local community. I know how valuable education is but also the experience that young people have of school is incredibly important and I wanted to help ensure that school is a positive place for every person at Benchill Primary school, staff and parents included. I have always worked in health and I think health and education have a a lot to learn from each other to ensure we grow caring and positive communities.

I throughly enjoy being part of the school and attending any events and occasions I can.  The commitment of the staff and the engagement of the pupils reflects the schools spirit and values of making learning enjoyable and inclusive. I am proud to be part of the wonderful school community.

Jackie Yorke, Parent Governor

I'm a married mum of 3 children at Benchill Primary School and I work as a hairdresser. I love being involved in all things my kids do from Sports to School!

Rob Dillon, Chair of Standards

I was born and raised in Wythenshawe and went to Wythenshawe schools. My job at Manchester City Council allows me to manage a range of services and projects across South Manchester but I remain a keen supporter of Wythenshawe and I wanted to put something back into the area voluntarily by making sure young people have the best schooling and opportunities. With my skills, experience and networks, being a governor at Benchill Primary School allows me to focus my efforts on making a difference for Benchill Primary School pupils.

Sarah McGuire, Partnership Governor

I work locally at Manchester Airport Group Plc, based on-site at the Airport. My role is HR Business Partner, supporting our Group functions in Head Office with all things people related, throughout the employee life cycle. I took up the post of Governor for Benchill Primary School in January 2017 and am very excited about the opportunity and the challenge.

I am 34, married, with a toddler who keeps me very busy. I have always been interested in education – my Mum is a retired Deputy Head of a secondary school, my sister is a primary school teacher and my best friend is also a teacher. I am particularly interested in primary education now that my daughter will soon be entering into the schools system. The experience young people today have of those early years at school are so important; primary education sets the foundation for their journey into adulthood, helps to shape their values and provides opportunities. I am also really passionate about supporting my local community and I am lucky that working at the Airport, a large local employer with social responsibility in the North West, has given me the opportunity to do so.
